  • Countdown to Christmas - aaaaaaaargh !

The shops are full of it, the TV is blasting adverts of food we "need", presents we "have" to buy. Crikey - it's still just under 5 weeks away! Today is apparently the biggest day for online shopping, but how about a present with a difference? You could buy your loved one a couple of hours in the spa - or better still treat yourself !!! 2 hr sessions are only £15 which includes use of towel, robe & slippers. Perfect for the dark nights chilling out after a busy day. See you soon !!

  • Pump it up girls !

Think weight lifting is going to give you a muscle-bound body a la Madonna? You could be missing out on the best way to trim down. Lets clear up a few weights myths......

Myth: Women bulk up easily with weights

Testosterone is the main hormone needed for muscle growth and women have much lower levels than men, (10 times less in fact!) so find it much more difficult to gain muscle. You'd have to lift a lot of really heavy weights to get bulging biceps!

Myth: Weight training turns fat to muscle

Fat and muscle are two completely different substances, and you can't turn one into the other. Working out with weights increases your metabolism and burns off fat, while simultaneously helping you to develop lean, toned muscle.

Right, I'm off to pump some iron !!

  • Weight of the issue

Morning all, over the last week or so I've been faced with some weighty questions. Am i really overweight? How can i keep the weight off? will it EVER come off ! Looking at BMI (body mass index) there are dangerous sections named "overweight" "obese" "morbidly obese" . Who decided on where one starts and one ends? BMI is used by doctors as a guide for healthy weight against height, and i must stress it's just that....a guide. Does it consider your genetics? does is take into account body frame? For those muscly chaps who are fit as a fiddle they can quite easily be "obese" when they tip the scales.

It's all about how YOU feel, how much energy you've got and ultimately your health. Because without our health we have very little. We all fluctuate in our weight over the years, and as some readers may agree it can get more difficult to shift as we get older. My advice is keep moving, keep smiling and be aware of your food and activity levels. Don't be a slave to faddy diets - boost your mood and exercise. Energise !

  • Food for Thought...

I was in the supermarket at the weekend and was faced with "lighter" "reduced fat" "half fat" options on soft cheese - enough to confuse many a shopper ! It's all too easy to get in the trap of thinking low fat = healthier. To a certain extent reducing fat from your diet is key - 1g of fat has 9 calories compared to just 4 calories for both protein and carbs respectively. So if you're calorie counting it's a consideration... BUT (and you knew that was coming!) reduced fat/low fat foods aren't always the golden ticket.

Foods processed to be low fat are often high in simple carbs because they add sugars to improve the taste. All these sugars can send your blood sugar sky high triggering an insulin release and then a blood sugar drop, which makes you hungry - so you just end up eating again and consuming more calories throughout the day. Crikey! I'm not saying reach for the cake - but worth a thought next time you chomp through 2 SpecialK bars and pat yourself on the back for being "healthy". Sometimes the real deal is the better option...
